The Nevertheless Principle

Way back in the 70's or 80's (I can't believe I just said way back...watch out my age is showing) I read a book called "The Nevertheless Principle." I don't remember the author's name and I gave my copy away long, long ago. I'll have to check at some out-of-print online bookstores to see if I can find it again.
Anyway, the book is about a woman who is riddled daily by her enemy "Fear." She is afraid of a lot of things. In the book, she is faced with her worst fear...death of her husband. Her husband is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Throughout the book she shares the journey God took her on and how she learned to be claim victory over her fears with one word..."Nevertheless."
God used this word to teach her how to trust Him. She found in scripture that the word was used most often as a trust word after great calamity or fear. By using this word she was able to trust God through the death of her husband and starting a new life.

Here are two of scriptures powerful examples:

2 Timothy 1:12 "For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day."

Hebrews 12:11 "Now, no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."

Lately, "Fear" has challenged my whole family in different ways. For me it is my beginning this new adventure in speaking and blogging. "Fear" has attacked my daughter in many areas: learning to swim, (she does not like to have water in her face) test anxiety,(she soooo wants to be perfect...can I get a witness?) movies (Disney movies scare her. Anything that has any conflict plot line no matter how simple, or if the outcome is good, she gets scared) and even DVD games. She is nine and still has not learned to ride her bike---scared. Her fear will sometimes cripple her and often stops us from enjoying certain things together. I will give her props though...She can talk or sing in front of any size crowd and can ride any roller coaster you can dream up! As for my husband, his struggle with "Fear" is that of becoming a Pastor. He feels God's call and we are fairly certain God has already provided the church. He preaches for them the 1st time on August 10th. (Pray) "Fear" however keeps tapping at his mind with statements like, "Are you sure?" "Can You really shepherd God's people?" "You don't know how to run a deacons meeting or handle a business meeting." He knows logically that God will see him through but the doubts about his calling have remained. Until yesterday when God gave him a big "NEVERTHELESS."

He works at the bookstore in the Billy Graham library and yesterday a couple came in looking to buy a Bible. He showed them several, all the while conversation was taking place on who they were, what might be their needs, ect. After selecting a Bible, the man began to question Mike about his calling. Mike shared with them about the church that we feel God is leading him to shepherd. The man walked over pulled down a "Minister's Bible" from off the shelf and told my husband that God wanted him to have that Bible. The man bought the Bible, signed it and handed it to my shocked husband. The Bible was a $175 Bible! But more shocking to my husband was the man's confidence in the calling of someone he had only talked to for about 20 minutes. Mike knew it was a "nevertheless" moment. We can't wait to see what God is fixing to do.

What about you? What are areas "Fear" attacks you? Share any "Nevertheless" moments God has made for you.

What an awesome God moment Mike had!!My eyes are filled with tears! I love how God works in us and for us if only we will let Him.

Pam, your post was great! Thanks so much for the "nevertheless" scripture and your moments. I have oodles--just like most folks. I want my children to realize that being nervous is a human reaction, but I don't want to live in the shadow of fear or model it for them. God took away all of that, even though we tend to cling to it during different times. I tend to physically shake when I speak before large audiences--unless they're children-then I'm fine!! I want to rid my self of that anxiety--something else to leave at the foot of the throne.

I'll see if I can find that book! Right now, I'm reading THE SHACK--quite insightful!

Have a wonderful day!
Love ya,
Susan

Hey, Pamela!

When I think of my "Nevertheless" moments, I think about how five years ago my life turned upside down when I discovered my husband's journey into sin. I feared losing everything: my marriage, custody of my children (from 1st marriage), my house, my business. And I did lose it all. Nevertheless, God was faithful. He showed me I had not lost my foundation- Him.

He taught me to pray, "Lord, what is the right response? What is the righteous response?"

Six months later, I regained custody. He provided a job. Two years later, He gave me a new house. He patiently restored my husband to Himself. Fours years after our separation, He returned my husband to me. We celebrate a year back together next month.

Nevertheless. Alwaysthemore. :)

Onward,
Lisa

Today I am praying Pam for your precious daughter. You see I have all in boys in my home, well except for my brown hairy girl dog! But my heart is definitely needing to pray for her.

Dear Jesus please be with this sweet little girl that you created, cover her in your courage and strength. Give her a picture of what You and Your strength looks like, so that she can go out and conquer what needs conquering. Surround her with positive role models. Protect her mind, her body and her sweet spirit. Thank you Father for creating this beautiful child! We love you Jesus-Amen

Wow what a great "visible" God moment! I just love when we see Him so clearly in a circumstance.

This post was meant for me. The other night as I was reading Cure for the Common Life, it spoke of when Jesus called Peter. Peter had been fishing all night long with nothing to show for it and Christ told him to let his net down on the other side. Peter's response was “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” This has stuck with me since then. I have been afraid to move forward with something that I think God is prompting because of fear, fear of failure and of rejection. This was one more confirmation of a small step for me. Thank you! Rich Blessings -

My daughter sounds a lot like yours. She is very cautious. She fears making a mistake or doing something "wrong."

I guess maybe I'm the same. I don't want to screw up either. It's hard to step out in faith.

Loved todays post and what a blessing your husband had! Praise God.

Okay, you got my curiousity going about "Nevertheless" and fears. I wasn't sure how this related to FEARS until I looked it up on BibleGateway.com. and found the Savior of us all, Jesus, saying this same word.

In Matt 26:39 (NKJV) "He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; NEVERTHELESS, not as I will, but as You will.”

In Mark 14:36 (NKJV) And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; NEVERTHELESS, not what I will, but what You will.”

And in Luke 22:42 (NKJV)... saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; NEVERTHELESS not My will, but Yours, be done.”

Isn't God amazing? If Jesus had a nevertheless moment during what had to be the most fearful time in His life, doesn't it make sense that God would use them with the rest of His children too?

Please tell Mike God must have some big plans for ya'll because he seems to be in pretty good company today.

Love ya girlfriend! I'll be praying for you especially.

Hey lovely friend....

Your husband's moment with the "Bible Man" reminds me of a conversation I had the other day with my nail tech...the same nail tech I wrote about in "A Precious Blessing." She has been saving money for years to purchase a rice field for her family in Vietnam. When she was telling me about this rice field she just bought, I was just dumbfounded! A rice field? That rice field will help feed her family and community and is her way to minister God's love to them even though she rarely gets to see them. She told me that a few weeks ago, she was telling another client about the rice field and the client tipped her 50 dollars to put toward it. She gushed about how much it blessed her hear to have someone partner with her in her heart's desire to help her people. It is such a blessing to be able to encourage fellow believers in their callings. I'm so glad your hubby got such a dose of encouragement. That's awesome!!!

Love you! Lee

Hi! Just found your blog. What a great post. I just love the verse, "Perfect love casts out all fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." Our enemy so wants us to be afraid. Thanks again. Take care, Julie
